Fabio Fognini has won nine ATP titles

Italian Fabio Fognini won for the first time a Masters 1000 event thanks to a two-set victory over Dusan Lajovic at the Monte Carlo Masters.

Fognini, 31, beat Serbia's Lajovic 6-3 6-4 in one hour and 38 minutes.

World number 18 Fognini played in a series of five defeats in the Monte Carlo Masters, but beat Alexander Zverev, Borna Coric and eleven-time winner Rafael Nadal en route to the final.

"It was really difficult, Dusan played an incredible week," said Fognini.

Lajovic got a better start by breaking Fognini's serve early, but the Italian was defeated twice to take a 4-2 lead in the first set.

Serving for the set, he saved a break point before a backhand of the line gave him the advantage.

Both players lost their service in the first two games of the second set, but despite the treatment against the ankles and hamstrings, it was Fognini who dominated and played the game.

Fognini becomes the first Italian to win the Masters 1000 singles title and is the oldest open-air Monte Carlo champion.

He is the first Italian to win the Monte Carlo crown since Nicola Pietrangeli in 1968 and will become number 12 in the world rankings.
