Crystal Palace takes advantage of Arsenal's defensive incapacity to win surprise victory

IIf a single match could sum up the imbalances of the Arsenal team, the inevitable contrast between their offensive brilliance and their defensive incapacity, that was it. Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have scored two quality goals in the Champions League. On the other hand, Carl Jenkinson and Shkodran Mustafi, in particular, have committed the kind of mistakes that you would be shocked to see in the second level.

Such was the calamity at the back of Arsenal that clbad moments in attack meant nothing. This defeat proved to be the most grueling, totally preventable setback against a fully beatable team.

It was hard to believe, as Mustafi prompted Wilfried Zaha to score the second goal for Palace, as Unai Emery won his last 10 Premier League home games. It was also hard to believe that they had apparently put their defensive troubles behind them, conceding only one goal in their previous seven matches.

It looked like a regression for Arsenal after weeks of progression. They allowed Christian Benteke and James McArthur to score on either side of Zaha's goal, then pushed in vain as they tried to save a clutter they had created themselves.

Despite the late pressure, they could not do it. Last weekend, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have both lost. The Emery team has not managed to capitalize on its advantage in the race to the top four places.
