Thanks to June Brown, aka Dot Cotton, and Virginia Ironside (How I learned that 75 years old is the best age to start taking drugs, April 18) for their thoughts on living well in old age, a feeling that I support wholeheartedly.
But as I begin my eighth decade, I will abjure my over-consumption and continue to eat homemade muesli and a mostly Mediterranean diet consisting of fish, fruits and vegetables. I do not have any illusions about how this could affect longevity. It's just that it allows me to jump (metaphorically) off the table to make the most of the beautiful landscape that surrounds me and to read the Guardian lucidly.
As for the wonderful wines produced in the neighboring villages, I appreciate them too. However, it should be noted that the first sips are undoubtedly the best.

• You are wrong, Virginia! The interest of a healthy diet and exercise is to keep you out of the geriatric home and prevent the loss of your marbles. Doing the Guardian crossword every day helps too. At 81, I do not give up yet.
