Oil accelerated its decline to more than 3% on Friday after US President Donald Trump called Opec to demand that the deal bring down prices.
"I called Opec, I said that they had to shoot them down. You have to bring them down, "Trump told reporters, according to Reuters.
The international oil benchmark, the Brent, fell $ 2.32 a barrel, or 3.1%, to $ 72.08. West Texas Intermediate, the American brand, sold $ 2.20 per barrel, or 3.4%, to $ 63.12.
The price decline came after Brent briefly surpbaded $ 75 a barrel on Thursday, as traders weighed the impact of a suspension of some Russian crude imports into Europe on quality issues.
The oil market was already at its highest level since October 2018, after the United States lifted the waivers of US sanctions against Iran's oil-importing countries, which could lead to a deficit.
