George Russell does not have the best of times in Baku with blanket sheets ruining his workouts and illness affecting his preparations.

His FW42 crashed on top of a free sewer in Baku during the FP1 and destroyed his car. The session ended in just 15 minutes as Russell's race day was over, as his car required a new chbadis.

Fortunately, Russell avoided injuries but felt for the entire team who saw the hard work devoted to preparing his car to go aground.

"It's a difficult day. It's unfortunate for the guys to spend yesterday preparing the car for only a few laps, said Russell in the Baku paddock.

"I was going down the straight line and I felt a big shock through the chbadis and everything went off; it's just a shame.

"Right now, the plan is to do a debriefing, listen to Robert's comments and see what the guys have planned for tomorrow.

"Overall, today's day has been a little frustrating, but we need to make the most of the situation and I will stay positive for the weekend ahead."

Just to make things more difficult, Russell is still trying to overcome an illness he thought he had overcome in time for the race weekend.

"I feel better, certainly not 100%, I was really upset," he added.

"I had another day of rest, I will be in better shape tomorrow.

"I have not trained at all from China. I'm right in my bed doing nothing, I improved, then I woke up yesterday morning and I felt afflicted again. "

Teammate Robert Kubica made 27 laps in FP2, but was five seconds behind Charles Leclerc in the Ferrari.

The Pole admitted that he lacked self-confidence on a track on which he had never run before.

Kubica said, "It was not an ideal day to lose the FP1, I think everyone would have liked to have more track time, especially on an urban circuit, and for me it's a race on which I never ran before.

"The track is very difficult. I spent a lot of time discovering it during the second activity session, but I do not have much confidence in us, we are struggling globally with grip and we can not push the car because the tires can not stay in the command window.

"The red flags have lost extra time during the 2nd PC and it is unfortunate that we can not drive both cars on the circuit."
