The drain, in poor condition, has not been restructured for years because the badembly lacks funds for this purpose.
As if that were not enough, a bridge straddling the drain at one point and known as the "Korpevi Bridge" is in a dilapidated state and presents a risk to residents and also affects socio-economic activities, many residents borrowing alternative but tortuous routes accessing markets and schools.
Out of ground
An innovative event for the construction of the drain took place last Tuesday.
Globedam Construction Company, a Ghanaian construction company, is the contractor working on the project, valued at GH ¢ 495,748 and financed by the Common Fund for District Assemblies (DACF).
Mr. Boye Laryea, General Manager of the North Okaikoi Municipality, said that once the drain ended, it would be covered to prevent people from throwing garbage there, while protecting residents against falls.
At present, the drain is not protected, so it is cluttered with garbage, which causes the flooding of many parts of the municipality when it is raining.
Project
The reconstruction project is expected to be completed in six months and is expected to limit persistent flooding in the community and also facilitate vehicular traffic on the Achimota-Korpevi main road.
Mr. Laryea badured residents that the government would do everything possible to prevent flooding and unsanitary conditions in the area.
Flood
Greater Accra Regional Minister Ishmael Ashitey, who cut fires to begin work, said the government wanted the floods to stop in all parts of the Greater Accra region. In view of this, he said, the culverts should be placed under the streets of Accra, which are in flood-prone areas, to carry the floodwaters.
He said: "I hope that when this project is completed, it serves the community well.
The Regional Coordinating Council will continue to play its role effectively by ensuring that work proceeds as planned. "
Ashitey called on the residents to follow the instructions and make the project a success.
"We need you to support the project and provide the necessary badistance to the contractor. However, we also implore you to comply when it is necessary to demolish some structures to allow the realization of construction work.
We would get rid of illegal structures on the roads and water courses to move the work forward smoothly.
Recommendation
The North Okaikoi MP, Mr. Fuseini Issah, congratulated the badembly for coming to the rescue of the inhabitants, especially the residents.
He urged the contractor to not only ensure that the work was of quality, but also to deliver in time to relieve the residents.
