TThe Mayor of Baltimore faces intense calls for his resignation after the FBI raid on his home and office at City Hall.
Catherine Pugh, a 69-year-old Democrat, is being investigated for childrens' book contracts that have earned her about $ 800,000 over the years.
She sold her self-published "Healthy Holly" paperbacks to clients she could benefit from as a government representative, including a network of hospitals she oversaw and an important plan to health that does business with the city.
His lawyer, Steven Silverman, said that she would decide to resign once she was "lucid" and that she would be entitled to a presumption of innocence.
Mr. Silverman said, "She just needs to be healthy enough physically and mentally and lucidly to make the right decisions."
Larry Hogan, governor of the Republican state, was the strongest voice calling for his immediate resignation.
He said: "Mayor Pugh has lost public trust and is obviously not fit to lead."
The mayor called his book offers "regrettable fault". She sold for $ 500,000 illustrated paperbacks to the University of Maryland Medical System, one of the state's leading employers on whose board of directors she sat for nearly 20 years.
She also made $ 300,000 in wholesale sales to other clients, including two health care companies that had business relationships with the city of Baltimore.
