Robotics + AI – TechCrunch

[ad_1]

Last week, we hosted our third annual robotics event at UC Berkeley. This is my favorite TechCrunch event, and this year has been our best show so far. We had extraordinary conversations with a number of big names in robotics and artificial intelligence, demonstrated incredible robots and announced exciting news about the future of the category.

You can see a complete summary of all the robots we had on the scene:

And here's a discussion Lucas and I gave about the lessons learned from the event and what they say about the future of robotics:

For those who could not join the event – or just want a refresh – here is the breakdown of the programming and the big news that resulted.

Building a Better Robotic Society with Nima Keivan (Canvas), Manish Kothari (SRI International) and Melonee Wise (Fetch Robotics)

We did not know, during the programming of the event, that we would have a member of the Amazon Robotics team on stage. A week before the event, Canvas was acquired by the online retail giant, making it a fascinating conversation about the state of startups in robotics.

Can not we all hear each other? with Anca Dragan (UC Berkeley), Rana el Kaliouby (Affectiva) and Matt Willis (SoftBank Robotics)

As automation becomes more important in our lives, the subject of human-robot interaction (HRI) will become more and more important. A number of experts in the field are discussing how experts in robotics and artificial intelligence make this transition more transparent.

This reality does not exist: trust the era of synthetic media with Alexei Efros (UC Berkeley) and Hany Farid (Dartmouth College)

The panel will begin with a fascinating demo featuring a CGI Barack Obama. What follows is a fascinating conversation about digital forgery.

Build a Better Pilot with Sterling Anderson (Aurora) and Raquel Urtasun (Uber)

As automakers increasingly push for autonomous driving, AI and other underlying technologies will play an important role in the safety of pbadengers and pedestrians.

What happens after industrial robotization with Dr. Kiyonori Inaba (FANUC)

Industrial robotics giant Fanuc has joined us on stage to discuss how the company will use its new artificial intelligence tool to increase productivity with its bins collection system.

Artificial Intelligence: Minds, Economies and Systems Learning with Ken Goldberg (UC Berkeley) and Michael Jordan (UC Berkeley)

Two of UC Berkeley's key thinkers discuss the recent growth of the AI and robotics industry and what business and research needs to do to continue this innovation.

AI startups who activate artificial intelligence with Daniela Braga (DefinedCrowd), Ali Farhadi (Xnor.ai) and Daryn Nakhuda (Mighty AI)

Some of the largest companies in the industry have joined us to discuss what it takes to build a successful AI startup.

Greener pastures with Colin Angle (iRobot)

The CEO of iRobot joined us in introducing his new lawn mower, Terra. He also spoke about the company's first battles and gave advice to start-ups seeking to find a place in robotics.

Investing in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence: Lessons from Venture Capital Companies with Peter Barrett (Playground Global), Helen Liang (FoundersX Ventures), Eric Migicovsky (Y Combinator) and Andy Wheeler (GV)

This panel was filled with the best VCs of Silicon Valley robotics. Moderator Connie Loizos has an overview of the best dishes to remember from the event.

Make drones work with Grant Canary (DroneSeed) and Arnaud Thiercelin (DJI)

The popularity of drones has exploded in recent years, both among amateurs and professionals. But we are just starting to scratch the surface of what they can do. A startup and a representative of the world's largest drone company discuss what will follow.

The best robots on four legs with Marc Raibert (Boston Dynamics)

Last year, Marc Raibert announced the marketing project of Spot Mini. This year, he returned to the beginning of the production model and introduced some of the new robot tours.

Chat by the fire with Anthony Levandowski (Pronto.AI)

Star controversial in the world of autonomous driving, the former Google engineer joined us to discuss his new startup, Pronto.AI.

Build robots that build with Noah Ready-Campbell (BUILT Robotics) and Saurabh Ladha (Doxel AI)

Beyond factories and warehouses, robotics is starting to play an increasingly important role in the world of construction.
