Brother Stanley was the pastor in charge of the Sion Church in the Mattakalappu region of Sri Lanka when the attack took place.

The Sri Lankan authorities have accused a local Islamist extremist group, the national Tawheed Jamath, of the attacks, though the Islamic State (IS) group has also claimed that it has played a role.
