ROME (Reuters) – AS Roma took advantage in the tight race A qualification of the Champions League after the 3-0 home win against Cagliari on Saturday, placed the team Claudio Ranieri in fourth place.

Federico Fazio and Javier Pastore scored inside the first match eight minutes before Aleksandar Kolarov added a third goal late on the visitors.

This victory means that Roma now have 58 points, two ahead of AC Milan and Atalanta on 56.

However, both teams can regain a one-point lead over the capital club by beating respectively Turin and Udinese in their league matches over the next two days.

Cagliari kicked off an extraordinary recovery when the two teams met last August, returning two goals tied 2-2 in the last six minutes despite the dismissal of two players.

However, they showed no sign of offering such a challenge this time around, as Fazio was flawed after just five minutes. Pastore, who made his league debut since September, doubled Roma's advantage three minutes later by finishing curling.

The local team continued to threaten and was rebuffed twice by woodworking. Pastore's shot hit the crossbar before an effort from Edin Dzeko was deflected by captain Luca Ceppitelli of Cagliari and was no longer re-elected.

Roma finally got their third goal when goalkeeper Alessio Cragno stopped substitute Diego Perotti from returning to the path of Kolarov, who made no mistake.

Elsewhere, the chances of Empoli to avoid relegation were penalizing from the first shot of sending when they gave up their lead and lost 3-1 to the outside of Bologna. The Tuscan side is four points from the safety zone in 18th place with four games to play.
