In the Marvel film universe, there are a lot of Easter eggs. Many of them refer to comics (because, after all, this is the original source), but as the number of movies increased, they began to offer reminders of previous movies. The last movie, Avengers: End of the game, contains more Easter eggs than ever. Here are those that recall the Phase 2 MCU movies. (Full of End of Game spoilers to come.)
Iron Man 3
The film that launched Phase 2 was the last chapter of Iron Man, the first of the trilogies to be completed and the only one completed during this sentence. Because Tony Stark dies sadly in End of Game, he can get the greatest number of recalls from all 6 Original Avengers, and a few of them can be attributed to Iron Man 3.
End of Game Tony begins in the space, recording what he believes is a final message to Pepper Potts. He does it using his helmet, which he did for the first time Iron Man 3. Speaking of Potts, she became a full-fledged hero in this movie, donning one of Tony's costumes. She finally gets her own costume, which she wears in the final battle of End of Game.
But the most talked about Easter egg is one that many may have missed. Tony's funeral showcases almost all the remarkable characters from his past, including a young man, alone. It was confirmed that it was Harley Keener, the 10-year-old Tennessee boy who helps Tony to Iron Man 3. He is even played by the same actor, although he is supposed to be between 20 and 20 years old, instead of a teenager like this one.
Thor: The World of Darkness
Thor's second solo film was not very well received and is probably one of the least listened to by MCU fans. This is mentioned in End of GameWhen Thor, invited to explain what he knows about the Aether, essentially describes the plot of the film when he goes out on a tangent while talking to the other Avengers.
Later, we will see film moments from other angles, including seeing Jane (Natalie Portman) on Asgard. Thor even had a conversation with his mother, Frigga (Rene Russo), who was greatly underutilized in both Thor and Thor: The World of Darkness. End of Game gave them the opportunity to get back to the character, which adds a nice emotional context to the God of Thunder.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Conversely, The Winter Soldier is one of the most popular films of the MCU. It's also the first one made by the Russo brothers, so End of Game marks the end of their Marvel journey with lots of sonic reminders to the one who triggered everything for them.
The most notable connection is a very specific scene. Steve Rogers of the year 2023 goes back in time until in 2012 during the Battle of New York. He climbs into an elevator with several Hydra men posing as SHIELD agents, including Jack Rollins and Brock Rumlow (Crossbones). Instead of fighting them as he does in The Winter SoldierRogers now knows who they are and just whispers "Hail Hydra" to convince them that he is one of them.
Guardians of the Galaxy
Although they remained separate from the rest of the MCU for the first two films, the Guardians of the Galaxy play a central role in Avengers: war in the infinite and End of Game. After all, it is the adoptive father Thanos of Gamora and Nebula who is putting all this in motion, and Nebula's knowledge is both essential to reverse the effects and hinder the success of their plan.
When Nebula and Rhodey (War Machine) return in 2014 to obtain the Power Stone, they choose this year to be able to "follow" Peter Quill (Star-Lord). We're lucky to see Quill's first dance "Come and get your love" from an outside point of view, making it even more fun than the original.
Avengers: the era of Ultron
There are actually many small Easter eggs referencing the second Avengers flick, but let's focus on two of the bigger ones. The first is where Tony, defeated and weak after returning to Earth, refers to "a dream" in which all Avengers are dead. He is referring to the debilitating vision that Scarlett Witch gave him in Age of Ultron.
On a foolish note, there is a scene in Age of Ultron in which all male Avengers try to see if they can recover Thor's hammer. Captain America is the only one to make it move, and that finally materializes in End of Game, when Steve calls Mjolnir in a moment of need, causing Thor to shout "I knew it!
