Virgil van Dijk became Sunday night only the fourth defender for more than 40 years to be crowned player of the year by the Association of professional footballers.
Liverpool's center-back, at the base of the club's biggest challenge in the Premier League, was voted by his peers, ahead of Manchester City's Raheem Sterling, who won the young player's 39; year.
Arsenal women's forward Vivianne Miedema received the women's trophy after scoring 22 times to lead her team to her first league title since 2012. She was crowned champion Sunday after a 4-0 win in Brighton.
Van Dijk, accompanied by his wife Rike Nooitgedagton on the red carpet at Grosvenor House in London, was joined at the ceremony by his Liverpool teammates, Sadio Mane, Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold – all represented in the PFA team's # 39; year.
Liverpool and Manchester City dominated this year's awards, but Van Dijk won the most prestigious award, ahead of a list including Mane, Sterling, Sergio Aguero, Bernardo Silva and Eden Hazard.
