Rafa Benitez told optimistic supporters in Liverpool that he could not accommodate his old club – but there is good news for them.
The Newcastle coach knows that he could eliminate the title challenge of the Reds if they pulled something out of the match next week.
There is no more room for error with two games to go as Liverpool tries to catch Manchester City.
No matter what mistake will be fatal, but their former boss, who has won the Champions League, says that he must remain professional and focused despite his affinity for the Reds.
"We will do what we have done all season and try to win the match," he said.
"We play at home in front of our own fans and we will try to do our best.
"It's my responsibility to take care of Newcastle and if I were on the other side, I would expect the opposition to do its best and the manager to do his best."
Liverpool was strengthened by the injury of Ayoze Perez after his stint in Brighton.
The 25-year-old is likely to miss the match on Saturday night after being injured in the hip.
Toon fans are encouraging their boss to stay, even if it could be his last home game.
The Spaniard has no more contracts this summer and no agreement has yet been reached on his future.
Fans still chanted his name in Brighton and the former boss of Real Madrid already told them that he was anxious to stay.
"I'm really happy with the fans, at home and on the outside," said Benitez.
"Especially the fans who arrive on such a long distance, to support the team and their manager. I'm really happy about that.
"It's the same thing I said before. If we have news, we will let you know. Now it's just the game
"Let's hope we have meetings next week and then we'll see where we are.
"It has to be as soon as possible, because it will be beneficial for both parties."
