OSLO (Reuters) – Greenpeace activists sat on Monday on a Seadrill drill rig ordered by Equinor for oil and gas exploration in the Norwegian Arctic, the group told Reuters.
Four activists boarded the West Hercules rig, the organization said. The ship is anchored off Hammerfest, the most northerly city in continental Europe and the site of a liquefied natural gas plant at Equinor, Snoehvit.
"We are clearly in a climate crisis and can not accept any new oil. We must therefore show our resistance in every possible way, "said Frode Pleym, Director of Greenpeace Norway.
The activists come from Norway, Sweden and Denmark, the group added.
The platform is expected to drill a well in the 859 production license operated by Equinor in the eastern Barents Sea, about 435 kilometers northeast of the mainland coast of Norway.
Equinor did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The partners of the company in this license are DNO, Petoro, Lundin Petroleum and ConocoPhillips. Norway is the largest oil producer in Western Europe and the second largest gas supplier to Europe after Russia.
