Eight players voted for FWA Footballer of the Year 2019

Raheem Sterling was named footballer of the year by the FWA on Monday.

The Manchester City star, who has 29 goals to his credit this season in all competitions, won the award after winning 62% of the votes cast.

Aged 24, he became the first city winner of the oldest individual football trophy in 50 years – since Tony Book shared the trophy with Dave Mackay of Derby.

Sterling earned 100 more votes than PFA player Virgil van Dijk, who finished second after an impressive campaign with Liverpool.

Sterling's teammate, Sergio Aguero – who scored more than 20 goals in the Premier League for the fifth consecutive season – finished third.

Sterling was the winner by a considerable margin and only EIGHT stars in the Premier League voted.

Half of them were on the side of Pep Guardiola, David Silva and Bernardo Silva also receiving nods.

Harry Kane, the Tottenham striker and England, also received votes, as did Eden Hazard of Chelsea, the Belgian who won the award in 2014-15.

Perhaps the most surprising candidate was he however the Arsenal striker, Alexandre Lacazette.

The French striker scored 13 goals in 34 Premier League matches with Unai Emery's men this quarter.

The women's prize was tight. Nikita Parris, also from Manchester City, beat Arsenal Dutch striker Vivianne Miedema by the smallest margin.

The women's prize is decided by a two-step survey consisting of experts and, after the first phase, the duo has clearly become the favorite. The two polls voted at least 10 votes more than their nearest competitor – England's captain Steph Houghton – with an extra vote for Parris.

In the second stage, the Lionesses Parris striker won by a single vote (11-10).
