new, fully cloudified 5G network AT & T is based on an open source provisioning tool called "Airship", which hits a milestone Monday with the availability of version 1, the first production version.
"Airship is a delivery and management tool for the declarative software life cycle," Amy Wheelus, vice president of AT & T for Cloud Network, told Light Reading. Airship automates the configuration and lifecycle management of infrastructure software to build a cloud server software stack on bare metal.
"It is a lifecycle management tool for infrastructure software. It can start with bare metal, and set everything up for orchestration, "says Wheelus. Airship automates the provisioning, computing and storage of badets, including the operating system, OpenStack and other containerized software.
AT & T uses Airship as a valuable part of the infrastructure of its cloud network, on which it has deployed its core 5G packages to support this year's ambitious 5G deployment schedule. AT & T's Cloud network will include hundreds of locations on the periphery of the network, says Wheelus.
Airship is an upgrade of the deployment tool built into OpenStack, which is too slow for 5G needs, says Wheelus. "Today, in AT & T Integrated Cloud" – AT & T's predecessor for the Cloud Network – I can not do an upgrade without impacting my tenants, "she says the software updates take a few weeks with the integrated AT & T Cloud, but only 18 hours with Airship. . "And we are looking to reduce that time even more," adds Wheelus.
AT & T has been able to deploy its 5G architecture and network clouds in less than nine months, with the aid of open source software, including Airship, as well as close collaboration between development and operations teams, says Wheelus. The core of 5G packets is the first case of use – Wheelus calls a "tenant" – on the cloud network, and AT & T adds more use cases
Airship is consolidating several software distribution mechanisms for AT & T. "In my previous version of the cloud, I had to have different software delivery mechanisms whether it was a new site or brownfield sites, whether it was small or medium or large. We wanted a unique workflow, whether it was a brownfield or greenfield, whether it was pushing the next unit of capability or pushing for an upgrade, it's the same workflow it works from the same way, "says Wheelus.
In Airship, configuration information is stored in a single YAML document – a simplified, human-readable configuration file – generated by an operating team. YAML support is an alternative to having to give access to the command line of the team to make changes in the operating code itself, a process that has been slower and more subject to error.
Airship Version 1.0 launches at the Open Infrastructure Summit, an OpenStack Foundation event for cloud operators and vendors in Denver this week. AT & T describes version 1.0 as "enterprise clbad".
Compared to previous versions, Airship 1.0 offers a wide range of enhancements to security, resiliency, continuous integration and documentation, as well as improvements to the platform, deployment and tooling features, the OpenStack Foundation says. Airship is designed to provide Kubernetes production quality clusters.
The OpenStack Foundation boasts the merits of "fast progress" from Airship after launching a pilot project in May 2018, supported by the foundation, with the initial code provided by AT & T, Intel and SKT. In addition to AT & T, Airship is in production SKT.
AT & T Communications CEO John Donovan mandated two years ago that the company would be the first to launch mobile, last year 5G standards-based, according to a post scheduled to go live on the AT & T website on Monday . This necessary building infrastructure, network and parallel radio functions. AT & T's 5G network, based on the cloud-based network platform, is live in 19 cities today, with a national coverage goal in early 2020, says AT & T.
