Deputy Information Minister Pius Enam Hadzide advised members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to behave properly at the All Party Consultative Committee (IPAC) meetings in order avoid confrontation.
His council was on the verge of an ugly altercation between Ghana's Electoral Commission (EC) President Jean Mensa and NDC Secretary General Johnson Asiedu Nketia last Thursday at a meeting. from the IPAC.
The head of the EC had alleged that Mr Nketia was laughing while answering a question put to him, an act which she found disruptive and called him to order. This was not welcomed by Mr. Nketia, who turned up.
The NDC protested that Ms. Mensa was disrespectful to their general secretary at the meeting, but the deputy minister said she did not agree with the story, saying Nketia did not agree. he should not have behaved the way he had done it.
According to Mr. Hadzide, the secretary general of the NDC is a veteran of the policy and should have known how to behave during the meeting. He stressed that respect is essential at all meetings.
"He [Asiedu Nketiah] has been in politics for longer (sic) so he can not be corrected even when he is wrong? We must be respectful even in meetings, "he advised.
Mr Hadzide stated that Jean Mensa acted in the manner in which each individual would have acted in the same situation, pointing out that his actions were in no way indicative of arrogance.
"I'm going to find it shocking if we sit in a meeting and I do not say anything funny and you laugh. I will find it offensive and I will let you know. He does not show arrogance, "he said.
Meanwhile, a lecturer in political science at the University of Ghana warned that if the apparent friction between the NDC and the EC was not controlled, they would deteriorate.
