Chelsea has expressed interest in signing OGC Nice's defender, Youcef Atal, and could step in if its transfer ban is delayed, according to a report in The Telegraph newspaper.
It is thought that the Blues are part of a trio of European formations that have taken a liking for the right back, which has attracted attention with excellent performances in Ligue 1 this season.
The Bundesliga giants, Bayern Munich, are considered potential contenders for Atal, while the Spanish club Atletico Madrid would have identified it as a potential target of transfer.
The Algerian made a remarkable performance during the last outing of Nice. Patrick Vieira's side beat EA Guingamp 3-0, with the right-back scoring a hat trick.
According to the Telegraph, this 22-year-old club is held in high esteem by the French club. It is claimed that a commission of at least 40 million euros would be needed to convince them to sell Atal.
Chelsea is however well stocked with options right back. Cesar Azpilicueta and Davide Zappacosta are the current options of Maurizio Sarri, while Reece James and Victor Moses will repay their loans this summer.
Why sign Atal would be a particular gesture of Chelsea
Return of james
The return of Reece James to Stamford Bridge should be great news for all Chelsea fans. He is an extremely promising player, and the Blues should integrate him into the first team team instead of recruiting away.
Defensive abilities
Atal has shown for Nice this season that he is an excellent dribbler, that he has excellent technical skills and that he is a promising player. However, question marks remain on his defensive abilities, and Cesar Azpilicueta improves on it in this zone.
Price tag
Signing Atal, worth 40 million euros, would not only be a significant risk, but also a confusing signature. Chelsea has a plethora of back-sided, and spending big for another would be an unusual move.
Other needs
Signing a new right-hander should be Chelsea's least concern. They have much more pressing recruitment needs, especially in the midfield.
