Daphne Keith became the oldest Australian to have had partial hip arthroplasty under general anesthesia at 107 years of age.

After fracturing her hip during a fall, Ms. Keith was admitted to the Wollongong Hospital where she underwent emergency surgery in January.

An hour later, she was awake, alert and drinking a cup of tea with four sugars, says her surgeon.

Four days after hemiarthroplasty of the hip – which was to replace the ball of the hip joint with an artificial bullet and a metal rod – Ms. Keith left the hospital and now uses a framework to move.

The 108-year-old girl, who recently celebrated her birthday, would be one of the 15 oldest Australians.

She has become an example of how age is not always a predictor of the patient's readiness for an operation.

The anesthesiologists involved in her treatment co-authored a case study on the successful procedure that will be presented at the annual Australian and New Zealand College of Anesthesiologists (ANZCA) scientific meeting in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday.

"Surgical and nonsurgical options were considered, but without the surgery, she would have likely been forced to remain bed-ridden all her life," said Dr. Anthony Hodsdon, senior medical officer at the Montreal Hospital. Wollongong.

"What should I lose?" said Keith, who "wanted" the operation, said Dr. Hodsdon.

Her nephew Mick Chapman said that her aunt, who was a pbadionate ballroom dancer in her 90s, had to slow down a bit but was still moving.

"It's great to be in his company," said the nephew, 86 years old.

"Many people would not believe that she is 108 years old."
