Ghana's left-wing political movement has urged Ugandan youth to rid their country of Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, president since 1987.

Leader of the Economic Fighters' League, Ernesto Yeboah, said in a Facebook article that the 74-year-old leader was no longer ordering bids.

"If you feared Museveni because he was young and strong, I am happy to inform you that he is weak and frail," he said.

The 37-year-old musician, defender of liberty and 37-year-old MP Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, who bears the stage name Bobi Wine, became the main critic of President Yoweri Museveni with his political-themed songs.

His songs attract not only the attention of young people, but also the opposition of the ruling party, the Ugandan national resistance movement.

The party approved the 70-year-old president for the presidential elections of 2021, after the parliament voted to abolish the term of office, which could extend its hold on power until 40 years.

But Ugandan pop star Bobi Wine urged the president to step down. Museveni replied, he keeps to the music.

Bobi Wine was reportedly tortured in August 2018 by members of the Ugandan presidential guard after being arrested at a political rally in August, which had resulted in violent protests in the capital, Kampala.

Already under the charge of treason, he was arrested again on Monday, triggering a protest that was clamped down Tuesday by police who fired rubber bullets and tear gas.

Ernesto Yeboah, leader of the Ghana Economic Fighters' League, urged Ugandan youth to call for change, "it is now the best time to go on strike".

He cited Algeria and Sudan as examples of long-time African leaders who have given up power as a result of popular resistance.

The troubled Algerian president Abdelaziz Bouteflika, 82, resigned on April 3, after announcing his intention to run for a fifth term in the presidential election. This put an end to his control of power since 1999.

Months of protests in Sudan have resulted in the eviction and arrest of the long-time leader by the army on April 17, 2019.

Ugandan Foreign Minister Henry Oryem Okello said the country would consider offering asylum to the deposed leader when he applied.

According to the Economic Fighters League, young Ugandans have "only one oppressor" to Yoweri Museveni and "Africa stands by your side to free you".
