PARIS – Brief brawls between police and protesters erupted in Paris as thousands gather for May Day rallies under strict security measures.
Police used tear gas to control the crowd gathered near Paris Montparnbade station. AP reporters saw groups of hooded and black-clad people selling anti-police slogans, mingling with other protesters wearing yellow vests or waving union flags.
French authorities have warned that "radical militants" could join the demonstration in Paris and renew the scenes of violence that marked the previous protests against the yellow jacket and demonstrations of May 1 in the past two years.
More than 7,400 police officers are deployed in Paris.
Yellow jackets have joined the traditional May 1 trade union march to demonstrate their common rejection of the economic policies of French President Emmanuel Macron.
