Thousands of Parisians are joining the annual World Labor Day celebrations on May 1, which is taking place around the world.
Pandemonium erupted in the Montparnbade district of the French capital, where many demonstrators gathered en mbade before the parade began.
CNN saw a protester get hurt before being taken away, while others threw stones and other objects on the police.
Some in the crowd wore high-visibility jackets of the "yellow vests" movement, which has been organizing fierce protests against the government of President Emmanuel Macron for months. Others wore helmets and gas masks.
A spokesman for the Paris police headquarters told CNN that 200 people had been arrested so far for questioning about the demonstrations, mainly for violence.
The Paris police gathered a large number of people this year and deployed more than 7,000 police officers, a considerable increase over the 1,500 people who were on the streets last year.
The rallies date back to the 1880s, when the Socialists and Communists of the Second International adopted the day as trade union movements campaigned for better conditions, such as eight-hour workdays and the formation of unions.
In addition to the "yellow jackets", representatives of French unions and anarchists were expected in the street Wednesday.
