The Commissioner General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Mr Emmanuel Kofi Nti, said the Authority had decided to use prosecution as an important tool to ensure that citizens pay taxes.
He added that the intention of the GRA is to increase the use of prosecution as one of his weapons in the fight against non-compliance, tax evasion, as well as tax and customs fraud.
The status quo will no longer be, he said, adding that the GRA would bite hard this time.
Nti said this when launching GRA's prosecution policy on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 in Kumasi.
With the launch of the prosecution policy, the GRA gives all taxpayers, as well as potential and existing recalcitrant taxpayers, the opportunity to change and comply.
The GRA, he said, has stepped up its education and public awareness programs nationwide to raise citizens' awareness of various tax-related issues and the need for more information. comply with tax obligations to avoid any violation of tax laws.
As a result, he encouraged the general public, particularly income earners, to be knowledgeable about their obligations under tax legislation and prosecution policy documents so that they are well-advised to prevent any breach.
For his part, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta expressed his support for the prosecution policy, which he said was highly anticipated.
He added that the ministry would work with GRA's senior management to provide the resources and logistics necessary to enable the legal department to meet its prosecution objectives.
He instructed GRA management to ensure that the Department of Legal Affairs and Treaties became the supervisory office for all matters related to criminal prosecution, with the collaboration of other relevant departments.
