TThe Country Director at the World Bank said Ghana would save more than $ 100 million, or 2 percent of the country's gross domestic product, each year through the introduction of the e-procurement system.
Henry Kerali said the e-procurement system was a flagship project that would improve fairness, transparency and efficiency in the public sector and reduce transaction costs for service providers.
The World Bank signed a $ 97 million financing agreement with the Government of Ghana in 2014 for the implementation of the e-Transform Supply Project.
Mr Kerali said this during a speech delivered at the launch of the Ghana Electronic Procurement System (GHANEPS) in Accra on the theme: "A new era for public procurement".
The World Bank Country Director noted that the e-procurement system would improve productivity, as electronic submission of archives or submission of bids would eliminate manual labor and reduce costs.
He urged all public bodies to take advantage of the system to transform their operations, which would benefit the people.
Kerali reaffirmed the Bank's commitment to support the government's vision of delivering the Ghana Beyond Aid program, adding that it will continue to provide technical support for the full implementation of the system. in order to improve the ease of business. .
Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Minister of Communications, said the e-procurement system would ensure transparency and reduce corruption in the country.
"Online government procurement is increasing transparency and forcing the government to be more accountable by spending taxpayers' money, in addition to reducing the risk of fraud and corruption," she said.
The minister said the e-platform would provide potential suppliers with complete information on government contracts and with government institutions that it would receive adequate information about potential suppliers or contractors.
She said the platform would play a crucial role in reducing contract prices and government spending.
"We would like to see the e-Government project contribute to a significant efficiency of the price reduction of at least 10 to 20% thanks to increased competitiveness, a reduction in transaction costs of about 50% and a reduction of about 20 to 30%. % of public spending, "said the minister.
Ms. Owusu-Ekuful said her ministry was working with ministries, agencies and departments to advocate for the digitization program in order to catch up with the world, adding that her team was working with Ghana's immigration department to roll out a electronic immigration system. for border control, arrival visas and other immigration services.
She added that Parliament would soon set up an e-parliament system and therefore reiterated the Ministry's commitment to the Public Procurement Authority to migrate all agencies to the system.
