Despite its dazzling popularity, the supplement has disturbing side effects, a new study said.
Researchers at the University of Sydney have revealed that BCAAs (branched-chain amino acids) are linked to reduced life span, mood changes, and weight gain.
In the study, the team examined the effects of BCAAs and other amino acids on the health and body composition of mice.
The mice received either the standard amount of BCAAs, twice the normal amount, half the normal amount or one-fifth of the normal amount.

The results revealed that mice that had consumed twice as much BCAAs as normal had lower levels of serotonin, also known as the "happiness chemical," in the brain.
Professor Stephen Simpson, co-author of the study, said: "The decrease in serotonin caused by excessive consumption of BCAA has resulted in mbadive overeating in our mice, which have become extremely obese and have led a lifetime shorter.
Based on the findings, researchers recommend consuming a wide range of proteins, including those that naturally contain BCAA.
This includes red meat, chicken, fish, eggs, beans, lentils, nuts and soy protein.
