HThousands of people marched Thursday in Khartoum to ask the country's military authorities to cede power to civilian politicians.

The Forces for Freedom and Change, the alliance of opposition parties and unions representing the protest movement that toppled Omar al-Bashir last month, called for a million people to demonstrate after weeks of talks with the ruling Military Council.

Thousands of people began converging on a protest camp outside the army headquarters in Khartoum on Thursday afternoon. The number of people increased again at sunset, as the heat of the day dwindled.

Many chanted "Peace, justice and freedom: the choice of the nation is civil".

Others, referring to General Abdul Fattah al Burhan, chairman of the ruling military council, chanted: "Al Burhan, you are dirty, you have been brought in by the Islamists".

Bashir was brought to power by a Islamist-backed coup in 1989, and many protesters suspect his supporters in the military and public service of trying to prevent a transition to a democratic regime.
