On Tuesday, Emperor Akihito became the first Japanese monarch, in 200 years, to abdicate his post.

Crown Prince Naruhito will be replaced on Wednesday to inaugurate the Reiwa era.

The reign of Akihito – known as the Heisei era – officially ends at midnight. He will now be named Emperor Emeritus Akihito.
