19-year-old director wins first prize at Tribeca Film Festival

NEW YORK – Filmmaker Phillip Youmans, 19, won first prize at the Tribeca Film Festival.

"Burning Cane", which Youmans finished as a 17-year-old high school, won the New York Festival's Best Fiction Film Award on Thursday. The founders of the festival, Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal, awarded the prize to Youmans, who was chosen by a jury who described Youmans as "original original voice".

The film also won the Best Cinematography and Best Actor awards for Wendell Pierce. The actor "Wire" plays the role of "Burning Cane", a lyric lyric, as a Louisiana preacher, distressed by the loss of his wife. Youmans is currently in first year at the University of New York.

Tribeca also awarded the best documentary to "Scheme Birds" on the pbading of a Scottish girl.
