The family of Peter Mayhew, who played Chewbacca in the original Star Wars franchise, announced his death on Thursday. Mayhew died on April 30 in his home in North Texas, the statement said. Mayhew was a minor actor working as a hospital attendant when he was selected as Chewbacca the Wookiee in the 1977 Star Wars debut A New Hope. His portrayal of Luke Skywalker's hairy companion quickly made a fan favorite.
