The new TV spot for Toy Story 4 starts pretty harmless enough. Bonnie does DIY in kindergarten, lovingly puts wide-eyed eyes on her and then hugs him and throws him into her backpack. Woody jokes with spork, but his eyes move and – panting! It's alive!
We have already seen Forky and the big questions of his existence in the previous trailers, but this new sequence shows us the exact moment when he gains consciousness. Judging by Woody's reaction, he does not know the everyday objects that suddenly acquire sensitivity. Forky either, who never asked to be done. (Relatable, Forky, relatable.)
Toy Story 4 already announced as the most existential film of all the saga. If the concept of toys that are preparing for what happens when their owners grow up is difficult, then you have not seen anything yet.
Instead of questioning the ever-elusive "what comes after" toys – what the three original films did gracefully, packing a bittersweet ending in Toy Story 3, where Andy leaves his beloved toys to Bonnie, transmitting their heritage and growing up, Toy Story 4 seeks to question the "why" of the question: why toys be aware? Why are toys?
If you turn a Lego stack into a person form, call it Brick and play with it, do all Lego become a single sentient being? What happens when you destroy it?
And what about Sid's first Toy Story, who also created his toys – though mutilating existing toys and restoring them? Is this the reason why these toys can not talk because they are made of parts of existing toys, so their consciousness is collective and no voice authorizes it? What would it mean for Bonnie's creation if one of the pieces came from an old wandering toy ?! Is it simply the presence of wide-eyed eyes that makes spork want to live? Or is it Bonnie's warm and affectionate hug?
All this and more will be revealed in Toy Story 4, in theaters June 21.
