Here's what Ford said about his friend and co-driver (via the Hollywood Reporter):

"Peter Mayhew was a kind and gentle man, endowed with great dignity and a noble character. He brought to Chewbacca these aspects of his own personality, as well as his spirit and grace. RIP Peter Mayhew. Creating a character loved with warmth and humor is testament to the spirit of any actor. To do it under half a ton of yak hair takes a real legend. ????

At Star Wars Celebration last month, I had the chance to meet Peter Mayhew in the lobby of my hotel. He was heading to his room and he had come next to me on the scooter, which often drove him where he needed to go. I gently leaned over to introduce myself, and he could not have been nicer or more receptive. After decades of that, you thought that fan worship could get a little awkward, especially when you started to grow up over the years, but Mayhew took it all with a smile.

Peter Mayhew will be missed, but his legacy lives in the advice he gave to Joonas Suotamo, the new Chewbacca:
