An Arby employee in Clearwater is HIV-positive for hepatitis A

CLEARWATER, Fla. – An Arby fast food worker in northern Pinellas County has tested positive for hepatitis A, according to the Florida Department of Health.

The restaurant is located in Clearwater, near US Highway 19 North, not far from Florida State Road 586, according to health officials.

Investigators said the employee could have exposed their guests between April 5 and April 20. The Ministry of Health said that people who had eaten at the restaurant and did not have a vaccine against hepatitis A should be vaccinated.

The vaccine could protect against the disease if people receive it within two weeks of exposure.

The Department of Health – Pinellas will open a special Hepatitis A Vaccination Clinic at its Clearwater site at 310 N. Myrtle Ave. It will be open until 19h. May 3rd and from 8am to 2pm on May 4th.

The Department of Health-Pinellas continues to offer free hepatitis A vaccine without a walk-in at these clinics from 8 am to 5 pm, weekdays:

  • St. Petersburg: 205 Martin Luther King Street North Jr.
  • Pinellas Park: 6350 76th Avenue North
  • Mid-County (Largo): 8751 Ulmerton Road
  • Clearwater: 310 N. Myrtle Avenue
  • Tarpon Springs: 301 S. Disston Ave.

Hepatitis A is a virus that spreads from contaminated food or water or through contact with an infected person. Symptoms may include tiredness, vomiting or nausea, as well as a pain or loss of appetite. In extreme cases, the virus can cause a loss of liver function. If you have symptoms, call your doctor.

The authorities are asking everyone to be on the alert and report any other cases to the Florida Department of Health.
