A Ghanaian woman was arrested in Manchester for introducing ginger into her son's anus as a form of widespread corporal punishment in Ghana.

According to a report by Courant.com, police say the child's mother subjected him to particularly painful and embarrbading corporal punishment.

Aba Hagan, 40, was arrested on Thursday and charged with cruelty to persons, third-degree badault, harm to morality or endangering a child, and disorderly behavior.

The agents were sent to a Rachel Road apartment around 8 pm on a reported domestic conflict. They found a naked boy, whose age had been recorded in the police report, who had stated that Hagan had inserted ginger into his anus, the police said.

Hagan first denied having done anything, but then said that his son "was cheated at school and that she had punished him", according to The report.

"Aba said that she had taken a piece of ginger and put it in the anus (of the victim)," the report says.

"I asked why she would do that," wrote officer Daniel Roberts, "and she said that it was a common punishment in her country of Originally, Ghana, Africa ".

Using ginger in this way (sometimes using hot pepper seeds) is a form of corporal punishment in some Ghanaian families. Ginger causes a burning sensation and prolonged discomfort.

Another person in the apartment, whose name and relationship with the boy were redacted, "said that he had seen the punishment inflicted in Africa, but knew that it was an unacceptable practice in America and told Aba, "according to the report.

The doctors evaluated the boy and took him to Manchester Memorial Hospital. A report of suspicion of child abuse or neglect was forwarded to the state's children and families department, wrote Daniels.
