Manzo, then 46, and Cantin, then 37, entered the home of their townhouse in Holmdel, New Jersey, on May 13, 2017, and were greeted by two masked badailants. One of the burglars attacked Cantin with a baseball bat while Manzo had been repeatedly hit by the other invader, officials said at the time.
Nearly two years later, police arrested James Mainello at his home in Bayonne, New Jersey, on charges of second-level theft, second-degree burglary, and second-degree aggravated badault, according to a news release. release Friday evening by Monmouth County District Attorney Christopher J. Gramiccioni.
The other suspect remains on the run, prosecutors said.
Manzo and Cantin were linked inside the house while Mainello and a co-defendant allegedly stole $ 500 in cash, a Bank of America card and jewelery, according to the records of the Holmdel Township Municipal Court.
Before leaving the residence, Mainello or the second suspect reportedly said, "Do not worry with Paterson" and "This is what happens when you meet people from Paterson," according to the probable cause report. The same explicit text would have been used in both comments.
After being released, Cantin called the police and described one of the suspects as an "Italian with a North Jersey accent".
Both victims were hospitalized. Cantin was seriously injured in the face, including the broken nose. Manzo was also treated for facial injuries.
Mainello is currently being held at the Monmouth County Correctional Facility in Freehold Township, pending his first appearance in the Monmouth County Superior Court next week.
It was not clear right away if Mainello had retained the services of a lawyer and ABC News' efforts to reach out to relatives were unsuccessful.
In the case of a first-degree conviction, Mainello could be sentenced to up to 20 years in a state prison in New Jersey, prosecutors said.
Mainello was arrested at his home and is currently being held at the Monmouth County Correctional Facility in Freehold Township, pending his first appearance in the Monmouth County Superior Court next week. according to officials.
