To keep up the spirits, the band was filmed singing and drinking around a table at a hotel.

The authorities of Western Mongolia, close to the Russian border, have instituted a quarantine to prevent bubonic plague from spreading.

Tourists – seen wearing facial masks outside – are not allowed to leave Uglii (28,000 inhabitants) and stay in a local hotel.

According to reports in Russia, American, Dutch, German, Swedish, Swiss and South Korean tourists would be stranded in the city.

Images of an international group happily singing a Swedish song to keep themselves in the spirit of a feast during the plague appeared – but it is known that they begged the Mongolian authorities to tell them when they could leave.

Moreover, dramatic images of the Ulaanbaatar capital showed that at least one plane was being faced by anti-contamination rescuers to prevent the spread of the disease.

The tragic Mongolian couple who died of the plague was infected after eating raw kidneys from a groundhog, it is understood.

The city is closed due to marmots contaminated by the plague.

Russian tourists spoke of the closure preventing international travelers from leaving.

"The city is closed because of marmots contaminated by the plague," wrote the traveler Elena Kovena from Kemerovo in Siberia.

"It's so surreal."

She said, "Did you think that the plague was something of the age of darkness?

"U.S. too.

"We were about to leave Ulgii to go further in Mongolia, but all the exits from the city were closed and we were not allowed to leave."

"We were told to wait for updates on Monday, May 6," said one named Timur Konev.

At a local hotel, he said: "Six nationalities have come together today to plan the emergency exit.

"We talked to the local administration, the local police, but they did not let us out."

Plague is a bacterial disease transmitted by fleas living on wild rodents such as marmots.

According to the World Health Organization, the disease can kill an adult in less than 24 hours if it is not treated on time.

The plague is believed to be the cause of the Black Death that spread to the 14th century in Asia, Europe and Africa, causing about 50 million deaths.
