The orchestrator loves the beautiful and organic sounds of Shen Yun

HOLLYWOOD – Orchestrator and music producer Bill Brendle did not know what to expect before coming to see Shen Yun Performing Arts. He was impressed after seeing it in promotional videos, but it was nothing compared to seeing the production with his own eyes.

The orchestra attended the Hollywood Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, California on May 4th.

The New York based Chinese clbadical dance company is currently touring the world to revive 5,000 years of traditional Chinese culture. Her two-hour performance features a range of stand-alone pieces, including Chinese dance vignettes, vocal soloists, and dance-based stories, all backed by a live orchestra.

Brendle is an award-winning music producer, orchestrator, composer and musician who has worked in the fields of film, television, theater, recording and live performance. He is the orchestrator and producer of electronic music for Broadway's Summer: The Donna Summer Musical. He also staged the 2018 Tony Awards, seasons 2 to 7 of "American Idol" and "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno". In the cinema, he was a composer for "The Sentinel" and "The game of their life". In the studio, he arranged recordings with Sergio Mendes, Joss Stone, The Lonely Island and Jojo.

As an orchestrator, Brendle paid particular attention to the music played by the Shen Yun Orchestra.

"I often hear that when I go to the theater, it sounds very processed, very artificial," he said. "But the sounds I hear [from Shen Yun] looks very organic, beautiful sounds. "

The balance of the orchestration impressed Brendle most, who said that the composition effectively supported the dance on stage and formed a harmonious couple.

"I like the way they design the sound to simply enhance the beauty of the orchestrations without making it unnatural," he said.

The unique blend of instruments from Shen Yun's orchestra did not escape Brendle's ear.

"I obviously appreciate the sound of the orchestration. So I can see what they did to try to mix traditional Chinese instruments with Western instruments, and I think it works very well, "he said.

"I particularly like to hear that when the big percussion elements, the gongs, the drums, come on the scene, they bring a dramatic part to the musical orchestration. You can say that it helps the dancers to outdo themselves. "

The orchestrator also noted another quality, which might have escaped an average listener.
