Death of firefighters Some of these deaths may be directly related to the effects of firefighting

About 61 members of the Ghana National Fire Service have died in the past 12 months in the performance of their duties.

Many firefighters were also injured to varying degrees during the year under review, said Fire Chief Edwin Ekow Blankson.

He recounted this in a statement issued Saturday to commemorate the annual International Firefighters Day, to be held on May 4th. This day is dedicated to celebrating the dedication, gallantry, loyalty, dexterity and sacrifice of firefighters and rescuers.

"Some of these deaths may be directly related to the effects of firefighting. We call them heroes because they risked their lives for their fellow citizens and our dear country and that their memories will remain forever.

"We express our sincere condolences to the families of these deceased heroes."

Edwin Ekow Blankson badured the staff of the Command and Government's "ongoing commitment" to meeting the needs of the firefighters, also encouraging them to stay together, a unit prepared to fight for each other and to fulfill their functions as planned.

"Do not compromise your professionalism, no matter what the challenges, but always look for world-clbad firefighting and rescue for our country," said the fire chief.

Telephone hoax

Mr. Edwin Ekow Blankson reiterated that the Service was concerned about the many false alerts that residents are sending them.

Between December 24, 2018 and January 2, 2019, the fire department reportedly received, on average, joke calls of 4,000 phone numbers and 29,700 daily calls.

"I want to call the public to support our efforts to reduce the number of fires by adhering to our fire safety messages and also by giving up our hotlines with joke calls," he said.
