Dhaka:

A Bangladeshi mother surprised doctors by giving birth to healthy twins 26 days after the premature birth of a first child.

Arifa Sultana, 20, gave birth to a baby last month after a normal delivery, but doctors have forgotten the presence of a second uterus.

"She did not realize that she was still pregnant with twins, her waters broke down again 26 days after the birth of the first baby and rushed towards us," said at the same time. AFP news agency Sheila Poddar, gynecologist who treated the woman.

Podder performed an emergency caesarean section to bring the twins – a boy and a girl – last Friday.

The young woman from Jessore district in southwestern Bangladesh was allowed to return home with her three healthy babies on Tuesday. Podder said that there were no complications.

"I have not seen any such cases for over 30 years in my medical career," said Dilip Roy, Chief Medical Officer at Jessore.

Roy questioned the actions of doctors at the Khulna Medical College Hospital for failing to detect the second pregnancy.

Born into a poor family, Sultana said she was happy with the three children but said she was worried about how she would raise them.

She told the AFP news agency that her husband was earning just 6,000 taka ($ 70) a month as a laborer. "I do not know how we are going to handle such liability with such a small amount."

Her husband, Sumon Biswas, had a brave face. "It was a miracle of Allah that all my children are in good health, and I will do my best to make them happy," he said.
