Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have confirmed the existence of Naegleria fowleri, a unicellular organism called brain-eating amoeba. Symptoms usually start with severe headaches, fever, nausea and vomiting and turn into stiff neck, convulsions and coma.
The amoeba can cause serious illness up to nine days after exposure.
Health officials said the amoeba infected only 145 people in the United States from 1962 to 2018. Five of these cases occurred in North Carolina.
Attorney Justin Plummer of Greensboro identified the victim as Eddie Gray from Guilford County. He stated in an email that he represented Gray's wife and property.
The amoeba also killed a student at Ohio State University who was underwater at the US Whitewater National Center in Charlotte in 2016. The 18-year-old Lauren Seitz family from Westerville in Ohio, settled a complaint for wrongful death in April. Seitz died 11 days after being thrown into the water and under water at the center during a visit to the church in 2016.
