MIAMI – Road workers sent to Florida to repair a chasm had a surprise this week when they discovered that it had been caused by a tunnel leading to a nearby bank.
The FBI has released images of the underground tunnel leading to a Chase Bank branch in Pembroke Pines, about 30 km north of Miami.
Police and the FBI were called Tuesday night after road workers realized that a hole the size of a gap had been caused by a tunnel.
Further excavations have uncovered a 46-m crude tunnel connecting a forested area to the shore on S Flamingo Road.
The tunnel was just wide enough so that only one person could crawl on his belly.
"I would like to say that I saw something like this in the movies," FBI agent Mike Leverock told reporters.
"However, this hole is so small, it's unique."
The FBI said in a tweet that he was treating the case as a "bank robbery attempt".
