The refusal of a small fishmonger in a town near Elmina to rationally sell her fish and pay a hefty fine was seen by the city's chief ban the woman.

Margaret Akuvi Akoto, a 40-year-old fishmonger, has been drawn to the wrath of Edina's traditional council, which banned her because she refused to pay a fine for not having sold his fish rationally.

A daily graphic report seen by YEN.com.gh Akoto was asked to leave Bantuma, near Elmina, in an apparent exercise of traditional justice.

Akoto, a member of the city's fishmongers' badociation, challenged the group's decision to sell smoked fish in a rationing order.

In March 2019, members of the badociation announced that they would regulate the supply of smoked fish from Bantuma to the Keta and Denu markets in the Volta region in order to avoid the overabundance, but it was at a meeting in the absence of Akoto.

Akoto challenged the conclusion of the meeting. She also refused to pay the fine for her challenge.

This angered the leaders of the badociation and they dragged her to the head of Edina's traditional council, Nana Kodwo Condua VI.

After listening to the parties, Codua IV recognized Akoto guilty and banished him from the fishing community.

Unsatisfied with the decision, Margaret Akuvi Akoto asked the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) to intervene.
