On June 23, 2018, twelve boys from a junior football team decided to explore a cave in Thailand with their trainer. The group entered Tham Luang Cave in the northern province of Chiang Rai. But soon after their arrival, heavy rains began to fall. The flood waters rose and the boys and their trainer were trapped. The first efforts to find them failed. The research team included hundreds of people, including diving experts and lifeguards from around the world. After nine days without news and four kilometers from the mouth of the cave, divers found the hungry boys still alive. Now comes the difficult task of putting them safe through a flooded cave. It was a daring mission that cost the lives of a life-saving diver. The boys and their coach were all saved safely. Charlotte Chelsom-Pill from DW met with diver Ivan Karadzic, who took part in the rescue. He looks back on his experience on the first anniversary of the rescue.
