Washington: Researchers say they have found a combination of existing drugs that can be effective against blood cancer that mainly affects the elderly.

The researchers tested to determine if arsenic trioxide (ATO), an existing drug, was effective in combination with all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) in the mouse model and in humans.

They determined that the combination was "potently and extraordinarily effective" for acute myeloid leukemia (AML)
While most patients initially respond to anti-AML chemotherapy, more than half of those responding will eventually respond to a relapse when cancer cells develop resistance to treatment.

"There is an urgent need to develop rational badociations to treat diseases and overcome resistance resulting from treatment. By providing a critical understanding of the underlying mechanisms of the disease, we have identified a therapeutic strategy for the treatment of this type of LMA, "said Pandolfi, one of the researchers.

The experiment has identified key processes that these cancer cells use to develop or evolve against a drug in response to therapies, according to the study published in the Journal of Cell Research.

In addition, the team demonstrated that a combination of drugs already used for the treatment of another type of leukemia worked equally well against this form of LMA, both in vitro and in vivo .
Another form of leukemia known as acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) was a fatal diagnosis. It is now considered a curable disease, thanks to researchers who have demonstrated that arsenic trioxide (ATO) is effective against LPA in combination with another drug called all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA).

They determined that, although the drugs target different vulnerabilities in different forms of leukemia, the combination has been shown to be "extremely effective and extraordinarily effective" against this subset of AML.
