The Bronx man who faces charges in the death of his twins who died after being left in his car on his way to work, called his wife to the car just before he realized that his children were still there.
WPIX reports that Juan Rodriguez called his wife as he was coming out of the VA hospital parking lot where he was working and asked him to pick up their twins at the daycare. Moments later, Rodgriguez was horrified to discover that his children were not in daycare, but still tied to their car seat, because he had never let them down.
"He made a phone call when he was coming out of the hospital, asking his wife to pick up the children at the daycare," a police source told the newspaper. "He was supposed to take a uniform for his reserve work. He really believed that they were at daycare.
As previously reported CrimeOnline, Rodriguez is a veteran who served in Iraq and works to help support homeless and injured veterans in the hospital.
According to the WPIX report, Rodriguez drove two blocks after leaving the hospital car park before noticing the baby car seats – which he would normally bring to the daycare. The father would have stopped the car, then found the twins dead, with foam in his mouth. Witnesses said that he had started shouting.
"I have effaced myself! I killed my babies!, He reportedly said.
According to the report, the internal temperature of the babies had reached 108 degrees.
Rodriguez faces two counts of criminal negligence homicide and two counts of manslaughter. The authorities seem to believe that the death of his children was a tragic accident.
The grieving father was released on Saturday with a $ 100,000 bail.
