Fertility specialist Jan Karbaat, who died at the age of 89 in 2017, used his own sperm to give birth to at least 49 children whose clients used the fertility clinic in which he worked.

A group of children filed a civil suit seeking clarification on the man who fathered them. In February, the Rotterdam court ruled that Karbaat's DNA could be used for testing. The DNA kinship tests were conducted by the Canisius-Wilhelmina Hospital in Nijmegen.

The tests showed that at least four children were coming down directly from the fertility doctor. DNA tests have already shown that these four donor children have dozens of half-siblings. The tests also showed that six people were not spawned by Karbaat.

Karbaat worked at the FIV MC Blijdorp Clinic in Barendrecht from 1980 to the closing of the clinic by the Inspectorate of Health Care in 2009. The Inspectorate found that the clinic's records do not have the same effect. were not in order.

"It has become clear to us that fertility doctors were unable to monitor each other," said Ties van der Meer of the Donorkind Foundation, according to NU.nl. "The profession has failed for years."

For Karbaat donor children, this has resulted in a lot of emotional damage, which they can now start treating, Van der Meer said. "It's very nice for those involved to get clarification after all these years."

It is not yet clear whether one of the donor's children will claim compensation.
