Mike Walton, originally from Ozona, almost lost his arm because of the dangerous bacterial infection called necrotizing fasciitis.
Walton told WFTS-TV that he was about 20 miles off Palm Harbor when the hook caused him a small nick on his finger, something that happened to him hundreds of times.

On Sunday, however, the construction worker noticed black bubbles on his hand.
"I had like little blisters that were starting to form on my hand, and you could look like sweat drops coming up on the side of your hand, and then they just turned black," Walton said.
He was rushed to the Tampa General Hospital, where doctors considered amputating his arm, reported WFTS.
"They cut all along my arm to relieve the pressure, and then I received a skin graft from my elbow to the palm of my hand," he said.

The doctors were able to save Walton's hand and arm, but it was an urgent call.
"When you look down and you can see your own tendons, the back of your hand and your bones coming up your arm," Walton said, that makes things real. "
Walton was due out of the hospital on Wednesday and will be on antibiotic treatment next month.
