Californian architecture has captured the imagination of the world with its clbadic bungalows and mid-century beach houses. However, an architectural landmark of the state has taken a distinctly different route, which is not to the taste of the city.
The "Flintstones" home in northern California seems to be taking its architectural landmarks from the city of Bedrock. The experimental house was built in the 1970s using a technique of spraying concrete to create curved walls. The result is a building in which Fred and Wilma would feel at home and became a landmark for drivers who pbaded the I-280.
The house is located in the upscale town of Hillsborough, which has a unique architectural history. This is the site of a Frank Lloyd Wright house where the famous real estate developer Joseph Eichler once rented. Inspired by the house, Eichler then helped to popularize the mid-century modern style; his Californian homes have become icons of the movement.
It has long been a source of concern for the city's inhabitants and Florence Fang, who bought the house in 2017, has not helped exactly the house to gain popularity.
Fang is responsible for the large metal dinosaurs and Flintstones figurines that dot the property. She also installed a bridge, a parking lot and, in a particularly subtle gesture, an enthusiastic sign proclaiming "Yabba-dabba-doo".
Although some may say that she simply honors the legacy of a beloved cartoon family, the city does not agree. Fang faces a lawsuit, claiming that the house, whose position at the top of a hill prevents pbaders-by from going unnoticed, has become a public nuisance. According to the lawsuit, the improvements made by Fang were made largely without authorization.
The prosecution reports that Fang was asked to stop work several times, with officials calling him "a highly visible source of visual pollution that does not meet community standards."
Fang paid a $ 200 fine last year, local newspaper Daily Journal reported, but failed to dismantle his dinosaur collection. In a statement seen by the Associated Press, his grandson said, "I think dinosaurs are beautiful. They make everyone smile and should stay. "
If the city officials succeed, the Flintstone house could become a little less Bedrockian – suffering a similar fate to that of the Simpsons House in Henderson, Nevada, inspired by the 742 Evergreen Terrace model. Once a colorful replica of Homer's house, it now looks like any other suburban building. But as a curious visitor, the house can not escape its history: the paint layer peeling in the garage, a layer of orange is visible below.
