A new alert service has been set up for people suffering from food allergies.

Supported by the official Food Standards Scotland (FSS) watchdog, he will send SMS and e-mails on missing or incorrect allergen labels.

Those who sign up can configure the service for any of the 14 major allergens listed on the package.

Last year, 86 allergy alerts for food and beverages were reported in Scotland.

Ron McNaughton, Head of Crime and Food Incidents, said, "Food allergies can have a big impact on people's quality of life, and Food Standards Scotland is there to make sure people with allergies or intolerances have information needed to make informed choices.

"We are working closely with local authorities, food companies and the Food Standards Agency to educate the Scottish people about any allergen-related information." We invite all people with food allergies in Scotland to sign up to receive personalized alerts on food allergy via SMS or email.

"People can access the new service from the homepage of foodstandards.gov.scot."
