A former MP, Mr. Kosi Kedem, calls for the establishment of a national library, claiming that his absence has created a huge void in the country's library and information system.

At the launch of his 13th book – Concept and Development of the National Library in Ghana – last Tuesday in Accra, Mr. Kedem explained that the National Library was the official repository of printed works, the general library, the bibliographic center of Information and coordination center. , planning and simulation of the entire library system of the nation.
Using information and communication technologies (ICT), the national library should be able to function as a one-stop shop or database for searching and accessing all the information resources held in country libraries with a single click.
The former legislator expressed concern that, although information was abundant in the country, it was difficult to obtain and easily accessible because of its dispersal, lack of coordination, lack of -packaging and insufficient documentation, due to lack of national library.
Library Scenario
Mr. Kedem pointed out that the lack of a national library did not speak well of the country, which in the 1950s and 1960s had inspired and paved the way for the development of libraries in sub-Saharan Africa.
What is happening in the country has now created isolated independent libraries that do not "talk to each other or interact very much".
He added that each library protected its territory or sphere of influence and did its own work. "There is little or no coordination and it's a pretty messy and disoriented scenario for the library," he said.
Book Review
The concept and development of the National Library in Ghana is presented in four chapters, the introductory chapter highlighting why the country deserves a national library.
The second chapter provides an overview of some national libraries from developed and developing countries, which will serve as a guide for the creation of a national library in Ghana.
The author presents for each national library its historical origin, its objectives and its functions; administrative and organizational structure, legal deposit and library services.
Chapter Three situates the concept and development of national libraries in Ghana in context, with a historical overview of library development in the country, citing important personalities and important gifts.
In the last chapter, Mr. Kedem commented on the lack of adoption of the bill on library services, which he said was submitted to Parliament in 2015.
He noted that the tortuous adoption of this bill was the biggest challenge to the creation of the National Library.
President of GLA
Ghana Library Association (GLA) President Samuel Bentil Aggrey congratulated Kedem for capturing valuable work on the National Library in a book that he said would serve many purposes.
He added that the book gave hope and badurance that the concept of a national library was still relevant and would come to fruition soon.
Mr. Aggrey said that the badociation was not satisfied with the absence of the National Library, which could have played a very vital role as the country's supreme library body.
