BERLIN – A German court sentenced an Iraqi asylum seeker dismissed for raping and murdering a 14-year-old girl from the region and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
The conviction of Ali Bashar by the Wiesbaden state court on Wednesday followed a four-month trial in a case that fueled tensions related to migration. According to the DPA news agency, the court said that there was a "particular gravity of guilt", which means that it will probably not be released after 15 years, as it is of use in Germany.
Bashar, 22, was convicted of badaulting and murdering Susanna Feldman in Wiesbaden in May 2018.
Bashar and his family suddenly left the homes of asylum seekers in Germany after the murder. He was later extradited from Iraq. Bachar would have arrived in Germany in October 2015.
